Previous IGED Events
Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day (IGED) is an annual event hosted by the Society of Women Engineers (SWE-KC) and sponsored by many local businesses. The purpose is for young women to get a taste of what an engineer is and what they do. Annually high school students are invited for a day of activities that are fun as well as informative. In 2016 we introduced a new event, IGED Jr. to invite girls in grades 6-8 for a day of activities to learn about engineering.
2023
The 13th Annual IGED event was held on February 24th, 2023 at Bartle Hall. This year featured the catapult hands-on activity where students build catapults with paper and office supplies and try to launch the farthest! IGED also included an industry/university fair, an engineering discipline fair, and a college panel. The keynote speaker was Sarah Khan from Kiewit. There were 312 students in attendance and over 150 female engineering mentors. 2022
The 12th Annual IGED event was held on February 25, 2022 at Bartle Hall. This year featured a new hands-on activity, "beam bridges" where students built load-bearing bridges out of paper and other office supplies. IGED also included an industry/university fair, an engineering discipline fair, and a college panel. The keynote speaker was Kisa Caruthers from Burns & McDonnell. Since this was the first in-person IGED event after COVID, there intentionally was a smaller attendance in order to promote social distancing: there were 112 students and 76 female engineering mentors.
The 7th Annual IGED Jr event was held on November 11, 2022 at the UMKC's Atterbury Student Success Center. The students designed pneumatic hands with various office supplies, syringes, and plastic tubing. The keynote speaker was Meghan Calabro, Director of Distribution Modernization at Burns & McDonnell.
2021
The 11th Annual IGED event was held virtually, due to COVID-19. Multiple videos were created by the IGED Planning Committee and shared with local high school teachers starting April 13, 2021. Video content included an overview of "What is Engineering", videos from IGED sponsors, two Q&A sessions with female engineering students and female engineering mentors, a hands-on activity (Egg Drop and Coding), and a keynote from Kerrie Greenfelder, manager of engineering for the water division of Burns and McDonnell. The 6th Annual IGED Jr event was held at the Henry W. Bloch School of Management at UMKC. The middle school students learned more about the different aspects of engineering through several videos and interactive activities. One hands-on activity was to build a roller coaster to teach students how to balance engineering needed with costs required. The keynote speaker was Rachel Attebery, the Director of Operations for Diode Ventures, the infrastructure development arm of Black & Veatch.
